Writing cursive z and Z
The letter examples and writing notes on this page use Playwrite US Trad. The Modern option changes the worksheet model; some letter shapes and joins are different.
Lowercase z has a descender. The body sits around the midline, and the tail extends below the baseline toward the descender line.
Traditional z has a looped descender. Modern z has no descender and stays above the baseline.
z finishes with an upstroke from the baseline that leads straight into the next letter, so you keep the pencil down through the word.
Capital Z reaches around the top line, and its lower loop extends below the baseline toward the descender line. In Modern, capital Z has no deep descender.
