Writing cursive j and J
The letter examples and writing notes on this page use Playwrite US Trad. The Modern option changes the worksheet model; some letter shapes and joins are different.
Lowercase j has a descender. The body sits around the midline, and the tail extends below the baseline toward the descender line.
The dot over lowercase j sits above the midline.
j finishes with an upstroke from the baseline that leads straight into the next letter, so you keep the pencil down through the word.
Watch the difference between j and g. Writing them side by side on one row helps.
Capital J reaches around the top line, and its lower loop extends below the baseline toward the descender line. In Modern, capital J has no deep descender.
